CHAPTER 8

I check on the cave before I leave. When I’m satisfied the dagger is still safe, I hike back home and slip into my room to finish packing.

Jayse texts me while I’m folding up my clothes and stuffing them into my suitcase.

Jayse: Hey, I’m sorry to do this, but I can’t meet you in the morning. I have some stuff to do, and then I have the Keeper’s meeting.

Me: How about tonight? I can wait up.

Jayse: Sorry, I’m out right now.

I sigh in frustration.

Me: Are you sure you’re not just procrastinating this? Sometimes you do that.

Jayse: I swear I’m not. And to prove it, I’m going to make a trip out to Virginia so we can hang out for a few days and talk.

Me: When?

Jayse: Soon. I promise.

Me: Okay. If you need to talk about anything at all, I’m here for you.

Jayse: I know. You’re a good friend. I wish I could be a better one to you.

Me: You are a good friend. You always have been.

Jayse: I hope you think so after I tell you.

I’m about to text him back that of course I will when another message buzzes through.

Jayse: I have to go. I’ll text you when I know I’m coming out there.

Me: All right. TTYL

I put the phone away and concentrate on finishing packing.

Poor Jayse. Whatever’s going on with him has got him worried I’ll somehow judge him. I’d never do that to him. But I have to wonder if any of the Keepers know yet. I doubt it, or else he wouldn’t be out on a mission. In fact, they might banish him from the group or, worse, harm him.

“I’m so sorry you can’t stay longer.” My grandma enters the room as I’m zipping up my suitcase. “But I think this is for the best. I know your grandpa wouldn’t want you involved in this mess.”

“That’s what everyone keeps saying.” I prop the bag against the foot of the bed. “Grandma, when you said grandpa was associating with bad people before he died, who were they?”

“Oh, honey, I don’t want you to worry about that.” She smoothes my hair out of my eyes, something she did when I was a child. “I don’t want your grandpa’s problems to become your burden.”

“I’m helping with his case,” I tell her. “And anything you could tell me will be helpful.”

Her mouth plummets to a frown. “Are you sure you want to do that? It might be best to let someone else handle it.”

I shake my head. “I have to do this. It’s important.”

Her arm falls to her side as she sighs. “I guess I kind of understand, but promise me you’ll be careful. The people he was associating with … I think they were dangerous.”

I flop down on the edge of my bed and stretch out my legs. “So you know who they are?”

She takes a seat beside me and stares at the backs of her hands. “I only met them once, and they never gave out names.
